In the later half of the 20th century, researchers found that the compound within turmeric having pharmacological activity is curcumin.<br/><br/>Researchers have been looking at a variety of different antioxidants that naturally occur in plants, because antioxidants scavenge free radicals. Free radical damage, within the cells, causes mutations that can lead to cancer.<br/><br/>They are also investigating the health benefits of curcumin as a natural anti-inflammatory, because chronic inflammation plays a role in cancer development, heart disease and many other age-related diseases. <p>The fish oil vitamin benefits are actually due to the omega-3 fatty acid content. Omega3s are essential to human growth, development and life. The body cannot produce them. So, they must be consumed through diet. Many people don&#8217;t get enough of them.</p>
<p>When researchers have looked at dietary habits of native peoples around the world, they found that some diets seemed to be healthier than others. There were fewer incidences of coronary artery disease and heart attacks. Of course, this could have been due to a lack of smoking, air pollution or larger amounts of physical activity. But, in some cases, only the diet could explain the good health.</p>
<p>The Mediterranean diet, the traditional Japanese diet, the Eskimo diet and the diet in Southern France were some of the ones that were identified as particularly healthy.
